About Pedal/Crank Spacer 2009.1.12
To compensate all of MKS pedals we start to supply pedal/crank spacer, which is accessory of Ezy-series.
Current crank arms often have recess around pedal screw area.
Especially at racing usage, inward stagger of pedal position causes power loss and physical stress.
All of MKS pedals are designed to fit to crank arm main face, so we strongly recommend to add the spacers if your crank arms have pit area around pedal screw hole

Miscellaneous knowledge of bicycle pedal 2006.05.26

After W.W.II, there were about 30 pedal manufacturers in Japan and now, only two of them survived. One became worldwide bicycle parts maker, and the other, MKS became
Matured and experienced manufacturer of high quality bicycle pedals.
We used to receive various Questions of bicycle pedal, so we would like to answer and explain.

Pedal Axle thread
Historically, there were at least 4 types of screw standard for pedal fixing, but nowadays
Main standard reduced to only 2 types. Thanks to this convergence, most bicycle pedal except BMX became compatible.

1. BC 9/16 x 20 thread
British origin standard. The most popular Spindle screw size in Japan.
2. 1/2 in. thread
American origin standard. Mainly used for the pedal fitted to one-piece crank.
In Japan, applied to the pedals for BMX, beach cruiser, and exercise machine.
We fabricate several products with this screwed spindle.
FD-5 : folding pedal
PB-370: urban & comfort pedal
G-6000: MTB pedal
3. French thread
Mainly applied to some French bicycle crank arm
Not available in MKS product range.
4. Italian screw
Mainly applied to some Italian bicycle crank arm
Not available in MKS product range.
Type of Pedal
Once bicycle industry classified the type of pedal as follows.

1. Quill Pedal
The pedal with single bended pedal plate, which edge has a tongue-like projection. Found circa 1900. Main usage is for sports and racing. Since single sided pedal, combined with toe clip or half clip when use. Without toe clip, step side always face to ground. SYLVAN ROAD is this type pedal.
シルバンロード
2. Rat Trap Pedal
Named after its shape? Found around 1890. Double sided pedal. SYLVAN TOURING is this type pedal.
シルバンツーリング
3.Track Pedal (Pist Pedal)
A single sided pedal just like Quill Pedal, but without a tongue- like projected single bended pedal plate. This type pedal has two divided pedal plates on front and rear. Named after its purpose, mainly used at track/pist competitions, but sure available for sports and road racing. Without toe clip, step side always face to ground.CUSTOM NUEVO is this type pedal.

About Pedal Size 2006.04.27

Once bicycle pedal was nearly square shaped and the size was described as illustration.

But current pedals become more curved shape, or added functional protrusions.
For those pedals, measuring became difficult, or unimportant factor.
So we ceased to describe size on the catalog.

(2006/05/17)
About Pedal Bearing 2006.04.27

Sometimes we receive a question “What is the difference between Sealed Bearing and Sealed Mechanism?”

Sealed Bearing Pedal contains cylinder-shaped bearing unit, which called sealed bearing, (or cartridge/cassette bearing).
Sealed Mechanism Pedal contains traditional loose ball bearing, but with protect cover or sealing to prevent trespass of mud or dust.
So, the pedals with description “Sealed Mechanism” do not using sealed bearing, and the effect of those protections are not perfect or perpetual.
About Installation of Ezy-series Pedal 2006.01.17
Some of current crank arm have different shaped pedal attaching hole, a recess around pedal screw area (see photo. A).
With such crank arm, flange of Ezy adapter “creep” into crank face, and wrench area become narrower than pedal spanner (3.2mm thickness). As a result, it is difficult to fit adapter firmly.
To avoid this problem, please place a spacer (
on photo. B) onto the recess certainly before attach the adapter.

photo. A
To attach pedal firmly, push pedal spindle into hole of Ezy adapter until it clicks into position while sliding the adapter sleeve to crank arm face.
※caution
Then fit Ezy stopper in the place between crank arm and adapter sleeve.
If pedal attachment is not appropriate, Ezy stopper coud not fit into place.
In case of not proper fitting, please attach the pedal again and confirm the click.
Incorrect pedal fixing may cause un-aimed detachment or breakage.
For detail, please read service instructions attached to the product.

About Toe Clip & Strap Installation 2003.06.11

Many questions we have received “How to set toe strap?”.
Though depends on the shape of pedal, basically pass strap through slot of pedal body as photograph shown.
To adjust shoe-fitting, put your foot wearing shoe on the step side of pedal, then pull up the tip of strap to tighten. To loosen, pinch tab of buckle and buckle base.
To the question ”Which model could be set toe strap?”, the answer is “To the pedal with front pedal plate which have clip fitting hole”.
For MKS product, clip available models are as below.
EXA, Custom Pro, Custom Nuevo, Custom Wide, RX-1, Royal Nuevo,Touring-Lite, Touring-Lite Short, Esprit, Promenade, Prime Sylvan Road, Prime Sylvan Track, Prime Sylvan Touring, Sylvan Road, Sylvan Track, Sylvan Touring, Sylvan Stream, AR-2, Sylvan Lite, GR-9, Exim, MT-E, CT-Lite, RX-M, MT-Lux Compe, MT-Lite, MT-FT, G-6000

Note: as reflector is snap fit part, unusable after detachment.
“TC” marked products shown on MKS catalogue are single sided pedals and require toe clip install. For detail, please refer MKS catalogue.
